Petrol Pump 5 Litre Test: ±25 ml Limit and How to Record It
5 लीटर टेस्ट क्या है, कैसे करें और हिसाब में कैसे घटाएँ
5 min read ·
The 5-litre test checks whether a nozzle gives the right quantity. You fill a certified 5-litre measure from the nozzle and see how close it is to 5 litres. The usual permissible error for fuel dispensers in India is ±25 ml per 5 litres. After the test, the fuel goes back into the tank, so the test litres must be subtracted from fuel sold for that shift.
How the test is done
- Note the nozzle's totalizer reading before the test.
- Fill the 5-litre measure. Let the foam settle and read the scale on the neck.
- Note the reading after the test.
- Check the measure: is it within 25 ml above or below the 5 L mark?
- Pour the fuel back into the tank.
- Record the result: date, time (IST), nozzle, before and after reading, pass or fail.
Legal Metrology inspectors may check this during a visit. Keeping a clean record of every test helps you show the pump is checked regularly.
The ±25 ml rule with an example
The limit grows with the quantity drawn. For a bigger draw, the allowed error is larger in the same ratio.
Tolerance (ml) = Litres drawn ÷ 5 × 25 Before reading : 10000.000 After reading : 10005.005 Measured : 5.005 L Error : 5.000 − 5.005 = −0.005 L = 5 ml Limit for 5 L : 25 ml → PASS
| Measured | Error | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 5.005 L | 5 ml | Pass |
| 4.985 L | 15 ml | Pass |
| 5.025 L | 25 ml | Pass (at the limit) |
| 4.970 L | 30 ml | Fail |
| 5.040 L | 40 ml | Fail |
If a nozzle fails, do not ignore it. Get the dispenser checked. Short delivery hurts customers and your licence. Extra delivery quietly eats your margin every day.
Why test litres must come off fuel sold
The meter only goes up. When you draw 5 litres for the test, the totalizer moves by 5 litres. But you poured that fuel back into the tank. Nobody paid for it. So if you calculate sales from readings alone, the shift will look short.
Fuel Sold = Closing − Opening − Test litres One test missed at Rs.108.28 → 5 × 108.28 = Rs.541.40 false shortage Two tests missed → 10 × 108.28 = Rs.1,082.80 false shortage
This is one of the most common reasons an honest operator gets blamed for a shortage. Check the full shift formula in how to calculate shift sales.
Recording tests in the app
In Fuel Pump Book you can add any number of tests in a day. One test run covers all nozzles. You enter the readings before and after, and the app grades each one as pass or fail using the ±25 ml per 5 L rule. When you close the shift, the test litres are taken off fuel sold automatically, so the expected amount is right.
Common questions
What is the allowed error in the 5 litre test?
Plus or minus 25 ml for every 5 litres. So a 5 litre draw passes if the measure shows anywhere from 4.975 L to 5.025 L.
Is the test fuel counted as a sale?
No. The test fuel is poured back into the tank, but the meter has already counted it. So you subtract the test litres from fuel sold.
How many times should the test be done?
As many times as you need. Many pumps do it at the start of the day or at every shift change. Each test must be subtracted from that shift's fuel sold.
Who checks the 5 litre test?
Owners and managers do it regularly. Legal Metrology inspectors may also check it during a visit, so it is good to keep a record.
